SupaNova Sydney 2006

The perfect excuse for geeks, nerds and cosplayers to gather under one roof to meet the stars of their favourite Sci-Fi/Anime series or movies and also to buy anything and everything related to Sci-Fi, Anime and even Video Games.

Ah, Supanova.. The perfect excuse for geeks, nerds and cosplayers to gather under one roof to meet the stars of their favourite Sci-Fi/Anime series or movies and also to buy anything and everything related to Sci-Fi, Anime and even Video Games.

For those who don’t know much about Supanova head over to Yug’s Feature of Brisbane Supanova 2006 as he quickly goes into detail about what is Supanova and its History.

Anyway! I happened to show up to Sydney Supanova 2006 held at Homebush dressed as… myself. I’ve personally never been to any Supanova expo before.. so I had no idea what I was about to walk into. And instead of going by myself I managed to drag Belinda (my girlfriend) along with me as well as Shadow (Aaron from Video Games Live) and his mate Charmaine (Oh god I hope I spelt her name right).

We all woke up at 6:30 on Saturday morning, I have no idea why.. It was Shadow’s idea and I’m still sceptical about it. We quickly throw on our clothes and jumped in the car with Sydney Olympic Park as our destination. We turned up about 8:00am with a large line beginning already. To be honest guys, I couldn’t be stuffed waiting in line, so we talked to a staff member who gave us our VIP passes early, Booyah! We quickly snatched them and casually walked into the exhibition hall (by casually I mean teasing all the other geeks as we walk passed them in line).

As we stepped foot inside it was pretty damn huge. Dozens and dozens of stalls lined up with figurines, wall scrolls, comic books, DVD’s, Manga, trading cards, plush toys, key rings, pens, flags, capsule toys, OMG!! Everything.. I fell to my knees crying that so much anime goodness existed.

As me and Bel began our adventure inside the hall checking out all the booths.. Shadow and Charmaine ran off to setup their Video Games Live booth. We first stopped by TaMarket, one of my favourite online anime stores. Back in 2004, they had to restock every single Cowboy Bebop wall scroll because of me, as what Dr Zoidberg says "What an honour".

Activision also had a booth as they were showing off Call of Duty 3 (Xbox 360), Guitar Hero 2 (Xbox 360) and Marvel Ultimate Alliance (Again.. Xbox 360). I’d have to say that this was my favourite booth because a) it had video games and b) it scared most of the geeks/nerds off. I managed to play COD3 for a good hour, enough to start a preview about it. I haven’t played Guitar Hero before so I wouldn’t dare making an ass out of myself to play Guitar Hero 2. Marvel Ultimate Alliance proved to be the crowd’s pick mainly because it was a good pick up and play game with enough action to make any geek give more focus to the game than the booth babe standing right behind him.

With no surprise, Madman also had a store with... Well, I’ve never seen so many Anime DVD’s in my life. There was so many, it was piled up on shelves, at the counter, on the floor, everywhere! Each DVD was going for a good price too, I was very close to buying the Remix of Cowboy Bebop with 5.1 sound and restored image quality but I remembered I have ‘important car payments’ to make.

As soon as we finished checking out all the stores (with good timing) Sydney Supanova 2006 was officially opened. Because we were stuck inside for a good 2 hours we had no idea how big the crowd would be. I managed to sneak to the front of the expo to watch hundreds of people storm the front. Most of the cosplays at Supanova were done so well. I simply fell in love with the storm trooper get up.

There was nothing like asking for a storm trooper to give me a sexy pose for my camera… oh yeah, don’t forget to check out the photo album located on the top right frame of this web page. Through my lens you’ll meet some of the coolest people I’ve ever met in public (legally). Every one was willing to give off a pose to prove their love for the character; I thought that was very cool.

I managed to meet a lot of friendly Supanova staff who would give me the latest details on the show. On Saturday the special events line up was:
  • AMVS

Out of that entire list (for Saturday) I only managed to meet Vic Mignogna, the voice of Ed from Full Metal Alchemist. The rest didn’t really tingle any of my special spots as I was too much into the cosplay freaks.

We spent the rest of the day just wondering around meeting unique people and checking out some pretty rare video game figurines, especially the Resident Evil 4 collectables.

At the end of the day, I managed to pick up 2 wall scrolls, enough photos to shut Yug up for a good month and memories to last me till Supanova’s next Sydney event in 2007. Well done to the staff, special guests and to the fanatics who made that day great for anyone to enjoy (yes, including you normies).
