After having Game1 in Melbourne a few weeks back it was now Sydney's turn to crank the music (And I mean to a deafening level) and show off the latest from Nintendo, Microsoft, THQ, Activision, EA and... well that was pretty much it. Although the numbers were low that didn't stop any of the publishers from showing off their best.
After quickly setting up our Australian Gamer booth with a few bean bags and only the Super Nintendo working (I didn't dare to ask Yug or Matt why the Sega Megadrive was off.. I think they forgot to bring a cable.. Oh well, I suppose that's what happens when you turn 30) we soon began to get down and serious with Game1 and seek out those 'must have' titles. Oh and when I said 'we' I meant myself. Matt and Yug pissed off somewhere and left me for dead out our booth. So what did I do? I did the honest thing.. I abandoned my girlfriend at the booth to leave her up to the 'dirty work' (ie: greeting people).
Before I get started I would like to quickly mention and thank MyGen for having the only playable Playstation 3 there because well.. Sony wasn't going to do it. Well done guys, I hope you enjoyed the crowd.
The first booth I visited was Activision and god damn they had fantastic booth. They were showing off Call of Duty 3, Guitar Hero 2, Lego Star Wars 2, Ultimate Alliance and Lost Planet. I managed to play about 4 hours worth of Lost Planet during the entire weekend, and holy crap on a stick it is unreal. This is one Xbox 360 exclusive title that I am really hanging out for. The more I played it the more it reminded me of Resident Evil 4. It has the same gameplay and control scheme formula that made Resident Evil 4 one of the greatest title to hit the Gamecube... and PS2... and PC.. whatever. I can honestly say Lost Planet was the best game at show, without a doubt.
I also fell in love with Guitar Hero 2, I never got the chance to play the first one and I'm starting to regret now. Yug and myself kept duelling each other, nothing like getting the solo right for November Rain.. Woo! It is truly one of the best party games out there. As soon as I get a chance I'm picking this baby up for my 360.
Ok back to the expo, I later adventured off to the Xbox 360 booth to play some Dead or Alive 4, FIFA 2006, Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 and the religious Gears of War. My hands were glued to the controller of Gears of War for a good 2 hours. I haven't had a chance to purchase it yet thanks to Wii but this game is truly impressive for a third person shooter. It was clearly a crowd favourite and a positive indication that the Xbox 360's time to shine is now.
After meeting some hardcore 360 fans I wandered off to the Nintendo Wii booth to check it out. Before turning up to Game1 I promised Yug that I wouldn't play the Wii and savour my virginity for the Wii when I purchase it at the Midnight Launch on the coming Wednesday. So being the lying fanboi that I am I sneaked off and... Actually I wouldn't say sneak, I don't think a 6" 7 guy could sneak so easily with a crowd that maxed 5 foot.
Anyway, I had my first crack of Wii Tennis and my god it was addictive. I got my ass beaten harder than a twelve year old with Michael Jackson but I still managed to enjoy it more than Michael Jackson beating a twelve year old. I also gave WarioWare Smooth Moves a go and being the absolute nut I am with all the previous WarioWare titles I instantly fell in love with the Wiimote, it felt so incredible and unique to play.
I decided to give Wii Sports another go and halfway through it Yug catches me with Wii in my hand.. he also sees the Promo girl I was playing with Wii all over her shirt and pants.. it wasn't a pretty sight. I quickly explain to him that I tripped and accidentally caught the Wii in my hand but being the wise man Yug is it only took him a few minutes to realise I was lying. I then make another deal with Yug, I tell him 'I promise I wont play Zelda'. He takes my word for it and walks off. As he turns his back I casually ask the Promo guy for a go at Zelda.
I didn't feel like playing a dungeon so I decided to use the Nunchuck and Wii-mote for fishing. I could seriously see myself at home fishing in Zelda for an entire weekend. The game was so calm and refreshing, made you feel good and forget about the expo.
After a few hours of wandering around and meeting strangers I forgot to visit the THQ booth. You can't blame me for it; it was all tucked away in a little corner which was probably a good thing after seeing the games they had to show off. I couldn't understand why they would show off Saints Row, the game is almost 5 months old. WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2007, which didn't grab my attention much, and some Sonic game. Although I'd admit that the THQ booth did better than EA as they only showed off one game. It's their ground breaking new hit! It's so original, so awesome, so unique! It's... Need for Speed Carbon? That's a shame.
Let's fast forward to Sunday, Yug, Matt and myself were pretty run down. It was now getting to the stage where we were saying 'Hurry up! Finish! Please! Now!' but it was a good thing we didn't scream that until after we met some GameArena boys. I managed to meet up with Vaga, Triga and Favz from GA. We pretty much just played some Wii and old school SNES for a few hours before they headed out.
As Sunday progressed I began to put my final thoughts together about Game1 and Auto Salon. So this is my final verdict: cars and video games is not a pretty mix. The theory for it works out pretty well; I can imagine the organisers going 'Oh! Guys love cars and video games! Wouldn't it be awesome having these two in one location?' Yer.. no.
Honestly, fully sick car enthusiast bros and video game fanatics don't mix well. Even AG suffered some technical difficulty from these halfwits. I feel like Game1 was there to grab more attention from the car enthusiasts rather than the gamers themselves. What makes me think that you ask? Ohhh.. I don't know.. Maybe it was the RIDICIOUSLY loud music or the terrible raps some MC's were pulling off about giving away 'some free stuff'.
There's a particular moment I remember where MC's were rapping along saying "Yo, Yo, aight, Yo ready fo this? Who wants Need For Speeeeeeeeed Carboooon!......" *crowd cheers hysterically raising their hands in the air as the MC guy continues to scream out* "...Demo!!!!" *at this time the crowd begins to quiet down and people slowly lower their hands*
One of the funniest things I've ever seen. Alright that should rap it up (get it). If Game1 continues to hold an expo next year will I go? Hell yeah, but I hope the organisers of Game1 realise where they succeeded and where they failed miserably and correct those mistakes for next years event. Overall, I enjoyed myself and enjoyed the opportunity to meet Matt and Yug again, as well as other peeps around the arena.
