Romi : It’s online and it’s Quake. And while that alone is enough to justify purchase, there are some particular features that really make Quake Wars stand out from its competitors. First is the objectives system – rather than being a typical ‘capture the flag’ kinda game, your team is given goals that they must complete in order to win the battle. The second is how the teams are asymmetrical – the two opposing sides have different classes and they’re not identical, which makes for more interesting strategies. And unlike other games where some classes appear to be ‘token classes’, Quake Wars really does a great job at making all 5 of them really important additions to any winning team.
19. Grand Theft Auto IV
System: Xbox360, PS3 2007
Samo : Even if you’re a Sony fanboy, you have to agree that two games sold the Playstation 2. They are Gran Turismo and Grand Theft Auto. The two games franchises that every PS2 owner owns at least one of. You could only get them on PS2. Well you could get GTA on PC and much later xbox, but both releases were long after the PS2 release. GTA exclusivity was a nice little coup for Sony and it paid off for them. Big Time. This year, things are a little different. GTA IV is scheduled for release late this year and it’s now open slather, it’s coming out on XBOX 360 as well. You might go as far as saying sales of this game could define the next-gen console war; such is the importance of this game. Sure Saints Row was a step in the right direction, but GTA is still the definitive free-roaming freestyle crime game. We still don’t know anything about it, Rockstar like to keep very very quiet about upcoming games, but you can be certain there will be a new game engine. This one is going to be huge.
18. Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
System: DS 2007
Oracle : One of the main reasons why I upgraded to a DS Lite, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass picks up from where Wind Waker on the Gamecube left off. The Phantom Hourglass has been shown in trailers to utilise possibly every function on the handheld with new items and what looks to be a very unique storyline. My DS is hungry for Zelda!
17. Crysis
System: PC 2007
Brett : When your grasp on English isn’t great, you can get away with calling your company Crytech, your first game Far Cry and the follow up Crysis and still no-one will complain as long as you can create realistic looking water. In many ways Crysis is like getting a Russian Mail Order Bride, its going to cost you lots of money, but its going to look nice and hopefully be fun for a while at least.
16. Fable 2
System: Xbox 360
2007
AJ : I think a lot of us are looking forward to Fable 2 in much the same way we were looking forward to the original Fable. That's mostly because all the stuff that was promised for Fable 1 we STILL hope will make it into the sequel, because it sure as hell wasn't in the first one! Peter Molyneux is keeping quiet about this one so as to avoid disappointing the fans a second time round, but even based on "what could have been", Fable 2 is definitely one to look forward to.
Anna : I got really excited with the original Fable... until I realised you couldn't actually be a girl. I immediately stripped it of its title as an RPG and scorned it, never playing past the first few minutes. Fable 2 is Molyneux's second chance at getting to my wallet. The entire concept is amazing and the inclusion of the female builds lead to interesting possibilities... pregnancy could be interesting.
