After witnessing a fantastic performance from last years
A Night in Fantasia 2006 I was more than eager to witness another magnificent piece put together by musicians and gamers alike from Eminence. This year Eminence has dedicated A Night in Fantasia 2007 to strictly perform only video game music, thus bringing the fans A Night in Fantasia 2007 Symphonic Games Edition.
Because of popular demand Eminence were holding their performance on both the Friday
(20th of April) and Saturday
(21st of April) in Sydney, and once in Melbourne
(Tonight!).
I attended the Saturday night performance and once again I brought my fiancée Belinda with me to share the experience. We turned up half an hour early to the venue held at Town Hall and we were granted early access in because apparently we were VIP, I love you Australian Gamer.
We scuffled to our seats and waited for the rest of the audiences to fill the hall. Soon after, the lights began to dim and the host came out to welcome us all to Eminence's latest and greatest performance. We were quickly shown a video of Eminences previous
A Night in Fantasias, starting way back in 2003 and progressing through the years to the present. You could feel how proud Eminence was to have gone from a small unknown gaming group to a well known and respected orchestra.
During the introduction the host made a big note that Eminence is usually blessed with one or two special guests who are very popular video game composers straight from Japan, but this night they had seven special guests.
Shirou Hamaguchi, who is famous for his work in Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX and Ah! My Goddess: The Movie.
Junichi Nakatsuru, popular for songs featured in Soul Calibur I, II and III, Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, Ace Combat Zero and Riiiiiidge Racer.
Kow Otani, respected for his work in Shadow of the Colossus, Mobile Suite Gundam Wing, Wild Arms: Twilight Venom and Deltora Quest.
Go Shiina, well known for his work in Ace Combat 3, Mr Driller series, Tales of Legendia, Tekken: Dark Resurrection, and Hammer Champ.
Yoko Shimomura loved for her work in Street Fighter II, Breath of Fire, Super Mario RPG, Kingdom Hearts series, Heroes of Mana and Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
Yasunori Mitsuda, famous for writing music for Mario Party, Bomberman 64, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Luminous, and Chrono Trigger.
Hitoshi Sakimoto, extremely famous for his work in Breath of Fire V, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Romeo x Juliet.
Both Mitsuda and Sakimoto appeared as special guests at Eminences last performance for 2006, Passion.
Each guest was introduced to the audience throughout the concert before their composed piece was played. Finally, the host welcomed Philip Chu, the chief conductor for this evening
(and previous Eminence concerts) to the stage and so the program begins.
The feeling you receive when you first hear the orchestra light up to your favourite video game music is unbelievable - it's very comforting and makes you feel proud of being a gamer. Listed below were the songs performed that evening in no particular order.

Three extra songs were thrown into the play list, I'm not sure of the names but I know that one of them came from World of Warcraft (which was beautiful) and the other from Chrono Trigger. The final encore featured One Winged Angel from Final Fantasy VII, and the crowed went absolutely nuts over this song - wise decision Eminence.
I personally really enjoyed listening to Super Mario Bros Theme, Orchestra Piece from Zelda Twilight Princess, Shadow of the Colossus, Soul Calibur III, World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy VII, Tales of Legendia and finally Metal Gear Solid. It was very powerful and moving listening to these pieces which the orchestra played with outstanding effort.
Throughout the concert, special guests got up stage to introduce themselves. Most of them had Hiro help translate what they were saying in Japanese. It was hilarious because most of them poked fun at Hiro's bad translation and rock star like hair style. There were plenty of laughs to be had, especially when Mr Shiina got up on stage he yelled out
'Aussie Aussie Aussie' and the crowd cheered back
'Oi Oi Oi', after that was awkward silence, it was translated that he was very confused and suddenly yelled out
'Bye!' and quickly ran off stage and waved, very random yet very funny.
One of my favourite composers was Mr Otani with his unique style of having long hair on one half of his head and the other being completely shaved. He brought out a Katana and was translated that he should stop using his sword as a hair cutting tool.
Another highlight of the night was soon after the host had announced the winner for a huge prize pack which included Madman DVDs, World of Warcraft, Burning Crusade, and stacks more. The host says
"we have another special gift to give away, anyone who has the name Kelly Inn please come to the stage and claim your prize". You see Kelly stand up from his spot, and walk up to the host, The host then says
"You’ve now won a cheaper ride home with your very own concession card that you lost." I felt bad for the guy because of the embarrassment, but it was so funny.
With all that said I would like to wrap up this article and finish off by saying thank you to
Eminence for supplying us with the free passes we gave away to help gamers like Death Knight appreciate the magic and beauty of A Night in Fantasia.
Bravo Eminence! Another brilliant performance nailed.
Keep an eye out for the interview I had with Hiroaki Yura the Founder, Arts Director and lead violinist of Eminence, which will be online soon!
