Well, the Next Gen is now officially here…. Which makes it “this Gen” now I suppose…doesn’t quite have the same ring really. No doubt in a couple of weeks Microsoft will announce their Next Next Gen console and we’ll start all over again anyway. Of course the rest of the world is already ahead of us Aussies, but with that delay comes the benefit of knowledge. A 6 month delay in the release of a console not only means a better launch lineup, it also means we get a clearer idea of which console is worth the purchase and which one isn’t.
Over the past 12 months we’ve seen the Xbox 360 go from lackluster to OMFGR0X0R! The Wii has been released and is now all over the place (yes, pun intended). Finally, in the past 12 months we’ve seen the PS3 drop from its lofty over-hyped perch down to now be in the position of under-dog. I’m the first person to say that Sony is getting exactly what they deserve with regard to the “reality” factor. The fact is that the likes of Motorstorm, Tekken and Formula 1 CE look vastly different to what was originally shown at E3 2 years ago. But we’ve seen all this before with the infamous PS2 “emotion engine”... What a crock that turned out to be!
So enough of the pre-release hype, enough of the “real time weapon changing”, enough of the “next gen doesn’t start” until Sony say so. The next gen is now, and we can all now finally make up our own minds which console is the real winner. This little comparison isn’t going to try and sell you one console over another and it isn’t going to take into account the Wii. By now everyone knows the Wii is a special case, and comparing it to the PS3 and 360 using the measures below would just be unfair to it. Now, before I start, a disclaimer: I have owned an Xbox 360 since launch. I love it. I wasn’t even going to buy a PS3 for another 12 months, so I am a skeptic. So keep that in mind while you read this review.
Without further delay, let’s get into the 10 things you need to know to compare the 360 to the PS3.
