The Controller
Plenty of people out there love the Playstation controller. I don’t. I think it is horrible. Not only the SIXAXIS, but all the previous iterations. The natural position of the hands when picking up a PS controller is to have the forefingers rested on the left and right trigger buttons, the right thumb over the 4 action buttons, and the left hand with the thumb over the D-pad. This is a comfortable position. Playing a game which uses the left –thumb stick (which most games do), is uncomfortable to put it mildly. After more than 10 years, you’d think they’d have come up with something better.
But that isn’t even the worst bit.
I could cope if it were a standard dual shock controller, but 3 changes to the “tried and true” make this controller the worst of the current generation.
- The new analogue triggers are so horrible that they actually make gam play worse than if they were the old digital variety. It is practically impossible to comfortably use the triggers in a racing game, for example, without your fingers constantly slipping off. Why on earth they made the triggers curve in towards the controller is beyond me. Terrible design, clearly implemented without much thought.
- No Rumble! I don’t care what the PS3 fanbois say about not needing rumble. Try playing Formula 1 CE and see how annoying it is when you’re heading into a corner and spin for seemingly no reason at all! Did you get tapped from behind? Did you lock up the wheels? Did you hit the grass? With no rumble, you have no way of knowing. Yell all you like about “visual and audio cues” being enough. Fact is, if it isn’t on the screen you get no feedback. Tire spin, shot in the back, picking locks, car damage… the list of game elements that benefit from Rumble is near endless.
- It is too light. Yes it is a minor issue, but it makes the $1000 piece of techno-wizardry seem like a kids toy.
The first Xbox controller was quite simply the worst controller ever made. I loved it at the time, but I picked it up again the other day and realized just how big and ugly it was. The Controller S was better, and the 360 controller is perfect. It is comfortable, it is wireless, it rumbles and the thumb stick is in a sensible spot. THIS is how you make a controller. Microsoft didn’t feel the need to maintain consistency with its old console, so why did Sony?
