The Games
This is a tricky on for Sony. Just like Microsoft had troubles launching the Xbox up against a mammoth lineup of PS2 games, Sony are struggling up against a pretty awesome list of 360 games. Although the PS3 has just launched here, there really isn’t any one title that is going to get gamers to choose PS3 over the 360. Most of the current release games are available on both consoles, and from most reports actually perform better on the 360. The first party titles that are available have, for the most part, been sub-par entries into the PS3 lineup. With the exception of Resistance, the most talked about launch game is the free to download demo of GT:HD. Motorstorm, to be fair, is a nice game, but the sour taste of last year’s demo is going to be remembered for a while to come. Are there any games available now to justify a $1000 PS3 over a $600 Xbox 360… not on your life. But there is still hope on the horizon…a far, far, far horizon.
With only a handful of forgettable first party titles and many “released last year on the 360” third party titles, the next 6-8 months is looking pretty bleak for the PS3. It isn’t until well into the 3rd and 4th quarter that things will start to pick up with the release of Metal Gear, Warhawk and, dare I say it, Singstar.
Right at this moment, I could easily recommend at least a dozen games for the 360. No matter what genre you like, there are plenty of games to choose from. Not only that, but the games released last year are now being discounted to $40-$50. When you consider that some of those games are only now coming out for the PS3, even if you do love the game it’s going to be hard to shell out the extra for the PS3 version.
The fact of the matter is that Microsoft really got their act together this time around. With an awesome line up of first and third party titles, there really is no comparison…. At the moment. Given 12 or 18 months, the story may well be very different. But if you have a life expectancy of less than a year, it’d be hard to recommend the PS3.
