We got to see a few movies from Edge of Twilight, and were quite impressed. There's nothing hugely innovative in the broad genre sense, it's a straight story based action adventure. But there's nothing wrong with that at all. Some of the best and most playable games are story based adventures, and if all of the elements are done right they can be excellent fun.
It seems to me that too many games are going for a gimmick, deciding to be online or multiplayer or whatever, and they end up losing the purity of their vision, of their universe. You can't tell a story in a multiplayer setting, and you're essentially left with nothing but pointless combat for its own sake.
By keeping things clear and traditional FUZZYEYES has an opportunity to do the sort of game we know and love and do it really really well. And possibly make a buck doing it. With massive attempts at innovation comes risk, especially if that "innovation" isn't done very well. Just ask Auran. Auran got very ambitious with Fury, but they never really got the parts working properly.
That's where FUZZYEYES seem to have a really big advantage. They're really on the ball with what makes a good game, and with what they need to get right. The first thing they seem to have nailed nicely is the graphical style.
Edge of Twilight is set in a parallel world of dark and light. This concept isn't unique, and of all things it reminds me most of Soul Reaver, but if done well it could open a very intriguing gameplay mechanic. Unlike other games that play a similar mechanic, Edge of Twilight has very different options available between the light and dark sides. The dark is a place of ethereal druidic fantasy and magic, while the light is the home of steampunk gadgetry. The character himself changes between both areas, and the combat substantially different.
In appearance from what we saw Edge of Twilight is looking pretty. For some reason it reminded me strangely of Fury.
An initial video we saw looked a bit cramped, with a lot of corridors and ledges, but a second (and slightly raw) video showed a lot more of the scope and majesty of the game, which is really looking very impressive. For a game like this to work the story needs a sort of epic quality, and they really seem to have done a good job of that. Aside from a video we also saw a sneak peak render of a hand done for the game. The level of detail in the hand was insane, being substantially more impressive and detailed than my own low polygon mitt.
The other thing that's really going to define a game like Edge of Twilight is how it controls, both in terms of combat and movement. Of that we can't really say much, because we haven't yet played it. But we will!
What we have seen on videos is impressive, though. Edge of Twilight moves well, and should have the level of athleticism and grace we've come to expect from adventures these days. It also looks damned pretty. Long story short - we're really looking forward to seeing and to showing you more.
FUZZYEYES may well be a developer you haven't heard of before, but you won't be able to say that for long.
