When Rockstar Games first announced GTAIV will include 16 player online multiplayer modes there’s been one question on every gamers mind - how well can they pull this off? Rockstar recently held a GTAIV multiplayer event at the Microsoft offices in Sydney and were very keen to show off their modes for GTAIV Multiplayer, so let’s get into it.
There were only six or eight of us nosey nerds at the event that day. We each sat down to our own Xbox 360 which were linked via Xbox Live to each other. At first I thought we were connected locally which goes to show how well the net code of GTAIV stood up.
Death Match
The first mode we were introduced to was
Death Match. DM will most likely be everyone’s favourite mode. You can select which sections of Liberty City you wish to rumble in, whether it’s a small island or the entire city. Your mission in DM is to collect the most cash by killing other players and picking up the extra couple of bucks they drop when they die. How you want to kill them is entirely up to you. I found my most successful method that morning was to jump on a motorcycle and do a drive by to a group of three. I had to be quick because I’m a little more vulnerable to them than they are to me.
GTA Race
Next was
GTA Race. To put it very simple it’s Mario Kart with guns. Players select their cars and track before loading the match. Once the game loaded we were all lined up and as soon as the green light flashed we took off like crazy thugs. To successfully complete a map you must drive near the bright yellow checkpoints around the track. You can pick up weapons to use on other cars, pick up medipacs to completely heal your damaged vehicle and you can even get out of the car to set an ambush on unsuspecting racers or to simply change to a better car. During the first race I was dead last for the first lap after being spun out at the first corner. While the others were knocking each other off the road up ahead I eventually made my way to position 3 and found the bastard who spun me. Nothing says ‘Take that Bitch!’ when you run a guy off the road or pump his car full of shotgun shells. Once I crossed the finish line and gained 2nd position I couldn’t help but grin. I really enjoyed this mode and can’t wait to get my hands on it again.
Cops ‘N Crooks
The final mode we were introduced to was
Cops ‘N Crooks, a team based mode which requires everyone to cooperate and team up. The way this works is that the cops start off in a police car each with a sub machine gun and can see the crooks on their radar while the crooks start off with pistols, on foot and have an escape point on the radar that only they can see. The crooks have a boss which they must keep alive, if he dies its game over but if the cops let the crooks get to the escape point on the map its game over for them. As you can already tell the twist would definitely make this match more interesting with mates and clan battles.
As a cop, our team agreed for two cops to jump out of the spawn Liberty City patrol car and grab one each to help chase down the crooks. Nothing got my blood pumping than having 3 of us speeding down on a highway avoiding traffic with our sirens echoing in the city. We track down the crooks and suddenly this turns into a high speed car chase with crooks hanging out of their windows shooting aimlessly at us. Suddenly the crooks make a wrong turn and were coming to an uncompleted bridge. Their car begins to fish tale and slide into a 180 ready to take off the opposite direction. The cop car in front of me slams his brakes and forms a road block. I slam mine but end up clipping the back of his patrol car which sends me into a barrel roll and just avoiding hitting two crooks. My patrol cars on fire from the intense gun battle so I managed to get out of the car sneak behind the crooks car only to have the gang boss himself execute me with a head shot from his pistol.
GTAIV’s multiplayer modes are the icing on a huge cake that already includes a promising single player experience. GTAIV is definitely worth looking forward to and I hope to see you all online when it’s released in Australia on April 29th.
