E3 2008 - Day 2 Wrap-up
We reflect on the latest news from the Sony, Nintendo, Ubisoft, Activision and Capcom press conferences, as the AustralianGamer team give their thoughts, opinions and impressions on what stood out to them.
The second day of E3 has been and gone, and just like our
first day retrospective, we are back to reflect on the latest news from the day, as the AustralianGamer team give their thoughts, opinions and impressions on what stood out to them.
Things kicked off early in the morning for us down under, as Nintendo and Sony got their chance to announce stuff during their press conferences. Today also featured seperate conferences from Ubisoft, Capcom and Activision, providing plenty of details about all their sequals and re-inventions of existing franchises (suprise suprise).
Day 2 gave me a chance to find out a bit more information on already announced games, such as the promising Ghostbusters game, more screenshots from the upcoming DS title Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, and the new Resident Evil 5 videos. New stuff that has gotten my interest include the new GTA Chinatown game on the DS, a new Sonic game (yes, I'll build up my hopes again for Sega to come along and rape my childhood), a very pretty looking game called Infamous, and an intreguing looking title from Ubisoft - I am Alive.
At the end of the day though, I can't help but feel slightly underwhelmed by E3 so far. Sure, there are alot of quality titles that are being pumped out soon, but nothing has relaly grabbed me the same way as Half Life 2 that many years ago, or even Assassins Creed a few years back. The big announcement I was hooking forward to was from Bungie, who have now apparently cancelled their appearance at E3 this year alltogether! Doh!
Matt
Nintendo and Sony have now had their say, following on from Microsoft's blitz of mediocrity. They obviously were inspired, and continued the theme of "basically adequate" without taking Microsoft's lead on the "Innovate by doing what everyone else is doing" strategy that MS has stitched up right now.
Little Big Planet at Sony's Press Conference
Neither Sony nor Nintendo have new hardware to show, despite rumours, and there were some baffling ommissions from both camps. From Sony this included Home, which was glossed over as an "it will blow your socks off when it comes out" without actually saying when it will come out. Little Big Planet was a big feature of the Sony presentation, and they even used it to "create" the figures and graphs for their presentation. Which is frankly awesome. Nintendo were lacking in offering solutions to issues such as inadequate Wii storage and having absolutely the worst online presence possible.
Right now then, it's all about the games, and over the remaining days we'll be having a better look at the shiny new stuff that's started to come to our attention, including the ones shown at the press conferences.
