The third day of E3 brings us to our final wrap-up and thoughts of the entire event. Don't forget read our coverage of
Day 1 and
Day 2. So, kick back and read along as we reflect on the latest news from the day, as the AustralianGamer team give their thoughts, opinions and impressions on what stood out to them.
I'm going to go against the grain here and say I've been happy with what I saw at E3 this year. I think I've made no secret of the fact I don't mind sequels, have no issues with re-treading good ideas and concepts ... hell, I don't even have a problem with in-game advertising. This year was never going to be about innovation, no matter how many additional pieces of plastic Nintendo add to their controlers. It's about expanding and growing the existing library of kickass games and franchises on each system.
A few last minute annoucements such as Pikmin 3 get's me excited - I loved those games on the Cube - as well as another game called Velvet Assassin, another World War game admittedly, but following a real life protagonist in a splinter cell type game. As far as I know, that's something that hasn't been done yet, and has the potential to be a fresh take on the genre.
At the end of the day, what we've seen at E3 is a preview of what's to come leading up to this years Christmas period, and I think the previous years E3's have spoiled us so much that we are taking for granted the fact that there are alot of what look to be solid, enjoyable, quality titles on the way. Bring it on.
Matt
Despite the fact that the entire writing staff of Australian Gamer appears to have synced their periods, I happen to think that E3 has shown some really interesting stuff. Sure the console manufacturers have nothing much to show except that they can continue their existing strategies of adequacy for another year... but the games, man, the games.
Sony showed Ratchet and Clank: Booty Call (it's actually Quest for Booty, but I like mine better) looks really good and will be episodic, hopefully not in a Half Life kind of way. The other thing that looks impressive is MAG (Massive Action Game, hopefully a working title) which is an action FPS featuring up to 256 players on a map. That can mean sides of more than 120 people in a battle and that rocks and rocks hard.
Ratchet and Clank: Booty Call ... I mean, Quest for Booty
Then there's God of War 3. Shiny. Just a teaser but... Some of their more "little" games look like fun too, such as PixelJunk's nifty Eden, which reminds me a fair bit of LocoRoco CocoRoacho.
Excuse me if I skip Microsoft and Nintendo. I don't have a 360, and Nintendo have learned to bore me.
Outside of the big three there are plenty of exciting cross platform projects. Sonic Unleashed looks like a lot of fun and Mirror's Edge is undeniably good looking. Despite some of the early disinterest I had I'm finally keen for Prince of Persia now, having seen more, I'm really keen. Red Faction: Guerilla looks particularly interesting. The level of destructability is highly cool. I Am Alive has introduced itself with a bang, and will be one to watch.
Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft? Meh. Everyone else? Gold star!
