Around about this time I experienced some of the more annoying features of World of Warcraft. One was dying. Dying is not good, as you may have expected. It's not as bad as I thought it would be however. When you do die, you appear as a spirit at the closest graveyard, and must travel, in spirit form, back to your fallen body to revive yourself. This can be frustrating when you died in a cave surrounded by bad guys, which means when you resurrect yourself, you run about 5 metres before being killed again. The only real way around it is not to get yourself into such stupid situations in the first place, but really, that takes out half the fun of the game if you do that.
Another thing which happened at this point was that I got booted from the game. Just suddenly, mid mission, I was kicked out of the game, for no apparent reason. And then I had to wait in a que for 10 minutes in order to get back in. I had heard there were problems like this in the initial months of World of Warcrafts release, but I thought issues like this would have been sorted by now. And why was I kicked anyway? I'm paying money to be in this game, don't kick me out for the hell of it, its rude and annoying, and it makes no sense.
Apart from that, the levels from about 12 to 16 went by without much issue; I travelled back and forth between Stormwind City and Auberdine, completing various missions as I went along. I gained the ability to transform into a creature when underwater (looks like a cross between a walrus and Willie Nelson I thought), and started to dabble in some skinning and leatherworking skills. What this meant basically was that when I killed some creatures, I could then skin them, and create leather items out of their skins. Again, something that took awhile for me to get the hang of, and even to be able to FIND the leather making section in the menu systems.
Ben (Denzel), the silent australiangamer.com partner, also started playing around about the same time as me and Matt, and we had some enjoyable, if somewhat comical and silly, experiences and quests. Since I felt I had been playing for a decent amount of time, at least enough to not be considered a n00b anymore, I felt it my duty to help out other players when I could, and got a slight kick out of helping out a guy by the name of Zassanix through the wetlands. One of the more enjoyable aspects of this was just putting on NumLock, and chatting away about stuff.
In each new town in each new section I found, there was always a 'griffon master' who you had to talk to in order to gain the new 'flight paths' to and from the cities. One of the biggest kicks I got, and still get, is in just flying from one area to the other, just for the kick of it, and seeing all the areas which you haven't seen yet, or looking down on other players and you fly past.
Once I hit the early level 20's, I felt it was time to try some bigger quests with some bigger groups. One of the better experiences I had was in an area called the 'Deadmines', which contained what is called an Instance. An instance is basically an area while you enter in with your group members, and then that 'instance' is specific to your group only. If a different group enters that instance, they will not see you in there. I went through the deadmines instance twice, the first time everyone in the party eventually dropped out one by one, until there was just two of us left towards the end, and we were getting so badly beaten that we just gave up. The second try was with a few guys, one of who was a very high level (Swiftninja), and tended to be the front hack and slasher, while the rest of us just did what we could and collected the shared loot and experience.
There were a few experiences I had like this, and I was always thankful we had a higher level character in our group to make sure we didn't all get slaughtered. When I reach the high 40's and 50's, I would like to come back to some of the earlier levels and help some of the lower characters out.
Also of note was a change of guild. I had met a guy who was part of an Australian guild by the name of 'OZ'. I felt I had more in common with this guild than the one I was with, and so swapped over without any incident.
