feature :: xbox 360 vs ps3: the games
Game Comparison

Both Sony and Microsoft know that it's not the hardware that will win the war. Styling and sexy CPUs alone are not enough. Tech demos are only impressive for a certain amount of time, and then you need a solid lineup of games.

In the game department Microsoft has a solid lead here. The Xbox 360 is far closer to final hardware and far closer to launch, so there's a lot more substance to both a launch lineup and announced titles in general.

Pretty much every game we have seen for the Xbox 360 is real-time, running, playable game, unlike Sony's pseudo-realtime, dubious footage.

Here's a list of some of the contenders, and we started off with the most exciting ones first. This is by no means an exhaustive list, it's just games that kind of stood out as particularly interesting.

Xbox 360

Gears of War: Thought the name is far too similar to Gods of War, this looks to be MS's response to the Killzone demo Sony showed. The thing is this is a real game. It's really really realtime, and there's no questions. It looks truly spectacular, and shows what 'next-gen' is about.

Ghost Recon 3 has excellent graphics for a game that will probably have its best assets being deep and thoughtful gameplay, rather than just visuals. This kind of game is the Xbox market to a T, and MS won't mess with success.

Project Gotham 3: Incredibly realistic racing just got a whole new generation, and PG3 will be a killer launch title for the console. It's the sort of game that will be shiny and cool enough to sell systems. Yay!

Dead or Alive 4: The Dead or Alive games set a high water mark for both graphical detail on current fighting games, and the amount breasts can bounce without incurring ligament damage. It could be exceptionally good, and at the very least should be a good bit of fun. The Xbox 360 needs to cover every genre it can, and DOA4 might well be its only entry in the fighting game arena for quite some time, what with Namco back to kissing Sony's arse.

Full Auto: You drive and you shoot things. It ould be really fun. There's a nifty rewind feature called 'Unwreck', which lets you try and have another go of that corner that you were SO close on. It's hard to tell if that sort of feature will just take all the challenge out of the game, though.

Quake 4: It's Quake 4. You shoot things. Do you live under a rock? What do you expect, a puzzle game? Quake 4 uses the Doom 3 engine, but removes some dark. Way too much dark in that game. Already out for the PC this will be an interesting game to compare the PCs top end specs with the 360s.

Ninety Nine Nights: Alliteration sells, and we all know it. 99N (my own abbreviation? like it?) looks like being Microsoft's answer to the Sony/Square juggernaut of console RPGs. It's great to see that Microsoft are taking the Xbox to Japan in a big and thorough way, by catering to the market specifically, rather than just assuming everyone loves Halo.

Saint's Row: Highly derivative of GTA:SA, this next-gen anti-social simulator pretty much is about blowing things up and killing people. What can go wrong?

Perfect Dark Zero: MS bought Rare almost entirely to get this game, and it actually looks like a bucket of poo. That's just because the video we saw was running on development hardware, and I think was using a Voodoo Banshee for graphics card. Still, by the time it gets here (and probably by now) it should look like spun gold, and we will play it and drool and make little happy whining sounds.

Kameo: One of the most convoluted development stories in gaming history, Kameo was originally going to be on the Gamecube, and a very different game to what it is now. Frankly I don't even know what it is any more. I think it's about molesting pandas, but I'll probably have to look into it a bit more closer to release.

The PS3 side of things is a little less polished. A lot of the games that have been shown were rendered CG only, and were more teasers than any serious effort to demonstrate the games.

These games will probably be launch titles, but undoubtedly there will be a lot more by the time the system ships to Japan, let alone the US.

Killzone
Tekken 6
Devil May Cry 4
Heavenly Sword
Motorstorm
Killing Day
