The Australian Games Industry is growing, there is no doubt about that. With governments allocating more funds towards game developers, and more game specific courses becoming available, it's no wonder either. I find it interesting then that when you ask someone to name some games that were actually developed here in Australia, alot of people have a tough time coming up with a list. The response I got when I asked the question 'What are the Top 10 Games developed in Australia' on a number of Australian game forums was that Australia had produced a few games, but most of them were 'pretty crap'.
Of course, after doing a bit more research, and with alot of input from those very same forums, I was suprised to find that some of the better games that have been released lately were actually developed by Australians! So were many people. Basically, this list is to bring to light some of the more noteworthy games that have been created locally and were commercially and critically successful. It's also to try to let people know where credit is due, and that there is alot of talent in the Australian Games Industry.

Founded as Emergent Software in 1993, Ratbag is based in Adelaide, South Australia.
Greg Siegele and Richard Harrison spent three years and all of their personal savings developing the company's early technology. In 1996 they took the original Powerslide demo to E3, knowing that if no publishing deal were forthcoming the company would have to close its doors. Thankfully, Powerslide was the hit of the show, and before they knew it Greg and Richard had no fewer than eight of the biggest publishers in the industry engaged in a bidding war for the rights.
Ratbag was acquired by Midway in August 2005 for a reported $7 million and the studio was renamed to Midway Studios Australia. Then, only four months later, Midway's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Studios made a personal appearance to read a prepared speech to the stunned staff of more than 50 that Midway was closing down the studio.
