GO3 has come and gone, and regardless of whether you thought it was good or bad, one positive did come out of it – Perth people got to come together with other gamers from around Australia and share in their common interests.
Of course, that’s what these Gamer Meetups are all about, getting gamers in capital cities together, but in more non-typical gamer settings. There are always plenty of LAN and game parties organised every day, but what we’re trying to do is organise more social events where gamers can indulge in other activities while not feeling self conscious about their interests.
With that in mind, and with the support of AustralianGamer.com and Vooks.net, we set about to organise a Perth Gamers Meetup to coincide with the timing of the GO3 Expo. The plan was to meet first at Fast Eddies for some food and to allow under 18’s to join in on the fun, then to move on to the Moon and Sixpence Pub for some drinks, and from there to wherever the night took us.
Myself, Matt and Brett found our way to Fast Eddies first, where they have the most uncomfortable chairs ever it has been decided. We were soon joined by Lord Halo Nerd who seemed content just to eat our chips and not say too much. Soon Daniel (the main man from Vooks) and his mate turned up, and we proceeded to try to get into the other more classy side of Fast Eddies, but they wouldn’t let us in with the coke we had already purchased. Snobs!
So we stood on the street where we were joined by Hadyn, and eventually made our way inside to a conveniently spacious area in the corner where we could order dinner. It was here we were joined by Mr Incredible from the HyperActive forums, as well as David and Obsolete from PALGN.
Although a few of us had brought DS’s and PSP’s, most of the time was spent discussing rare games, the GO3 expo, and of course (Matt WAS there after all) World of Warcraft. It seems there is no escape. Drinks ensued, and for some reason we got a free Spider to our table as well, a practice which is apparently common place at Fast Eddies.
About this time we realised that sitting behind us were the main stars of the GO3 Conference itself – Hideo Kojima, Tetsuya Mizuguchi and Goichi Suda (look them up if you don’t know). We couldn’t resist waving at them through the glass and had to get at least a few photos, although eventually only Matt and Brett got a shot with Tetsuya as they left.
After a filling dinner we parted ways with the younger peeps while the more professional journalists (Vooks, Palgn) also headed home to get an early start the next day. Our crew consided of myself, Matt, Brett, Hadyn and Mr Incredible, and we headed up the road to the Moon and Sixpence Pub where we also met up with the boys from game developer Auran – Andrew, Nathan and Ashwin.
After many many drinks, I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard in months during this period, Ashwin and Nathan throwing verbal insults faster then one could blink. Ashwin’s questionable choice in women was a hot topic which lead to a impromptu kitty being setup and contributed to if he could seal the deal. That’s all I’ll say on that matter, as anything else said at that table really probably should stay at that table.
Deciding we were in need of music we could actually dance to, we found our way to a club called ‘Ambar’, which I felt right at home in. We took over the pool table and proceeded to drink and dance well into the wee hours of the morning.
Of course the event was a lot of fun; hopefully we will be able to do another one soon. I’d like to thank everyone who turned up, and I hope that everyone who missed out can attend and support the next one this time.
