GAME1 Melbourne 2007

Cav covers the gaming expo part of the annual GAME1 expo in Melbourne.

The Gaming Expo (Cav) | The Gaming Tournaments (Starks)
I was in an awesome mood by the time I parked my car at Spencer Street, as I had let my mobile phone fall out of the car window while crossing the Bolte Bridge and didn’t notice until I pulled up. Having only owned my Motorola KRZR for about five months, you could have sworn I was multi-lingual as my darling wife attempted to calm me down and tell me to go and enjoy myself at GAME1. (I think she was just keen to go shopping!) So off I went, to the structure affectionately known as ‘Jeff’s Shed’.

The Yugmeister had done as promised and my name was at the door. I grabbed my lanyard with my media pass and wandered in …. I am still unsure if the Security person at the door was a guy or a girl. So what if I was three feet taller than them? I still wasn’t game enough to give a bit of lip! I walked in and headed to the right ... Cars ... okay, the event is shared with AutoSalon, but I actually thought that GAME1 was the heavier partner in this weird relationship ... Damn, was I wrong.

I wandered down the middle of the exhibition, to find the reason I was there tucked away at the end of the hall. It had to be 1/6th of the space that AutoSalon had! Just as I get to the gaming end of the exhibition, I find Starks. I sing out and he looks at me funny at first, but then realising who it was, he is all smiles. I had the pleasure of meeting the DropBears crew, all decked out in matching tee’s like a good team should.

Starks took me around to see all that there was to see (but I’m really thinking that he wanted me to take photos of him with all the booth girlies ‘cos I have a good Sony Camera.) We visited the Ubisoft stand where I met CHAD, a Ubisoft PR guy. I really don’t know which he was more excited about, the upcoming release of Haze or the ‘fully sick’ Dodge Caliber ST, 1.8 Litre Manual, 4 Door Hatchback with a Custom Alpine Car Stereo, 20” Custom Rims, 3” Exhaust and customized HAZ3 plates. He and I got in the car and we closed all the doors except the hatch and cranked it up! We watched an Assassin’s Creed Video on the in-dash screen; both the clarity and sound were unbelievable. I’m so keen on winning that car I’m not even going to tell you about the details on the competition for it!

THQ brings the Smackdown

Starks had some DB business to take care of, so I went about by myself to see what little there was on display game wise, three trillion pounds of emphasis on the word ‘little’. During my travels I did bump into AustralianGamer forum members SniperXtreme and EXC355UM, who are both great guys! On the rounds I got my first glimpse of WWE Raw vs. Smackdown on the Wii and Mass Effect – which was slightly confusing, when I saw words appear on the screen like ‘Banshee’, I thought to myself: What’s this “Grand Theft Halo”. I guess I’ll have to see which team member scores the review duties on this one and see what they have to say. There were games like Guitar Hero III, Rayman 2, Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground and a host of others, but there was nothing really that made me push a little kid out of the way to get my hands on.

I went back over to the XBOX360 Competition area to find a few of the DropBears sitting in front of monitors, ready to play. I scanned the rest of the competitors to find a group of young ladies known as ‘HEART’ lined up to play against the boys. You go, Girls! It was actually good to see – and from what Starks reports, these girls weren’t bad players at all! A force to be reckoned with!

At least it was bigger than the Legendary Edition version

Anna eventually arrived and we had a chance for a quick AG Staff pic opportunity before I had to bail – quite photogenic these AG Critters, hey?

But other than that ... I was pretty disappointed with GAME1 as a whole. I’d say, that if you had no interest in cars and just wanted to be there for the gaming aspect and weren’t competing, you would save your money and go to the eGames Expo the following week at the same location ... for $6 less!
