Gamerthon Interview - Monkey Kong from Sydney Underground

Interview from Starks - Monday, 02 June 2008 @ 5:17pm

George Matthews a.k.a. Monkey Kong was the first professional girl gamer in Australia, and was contracted by CGS for the 2007 season.

Part of Sydney Undergrounds multi gaming clan for 2007, George is looking towards helping promote professional gaming through media and the events being held around Australia.

Starks: I’m here with Georgie aka Monkey Kong from Sydney Underground. Georgie would you like to introduce yourself and let us know your involvement in competitive gaming.

Georgie: Ok, I’m Georgie ‘Monkey Kong’ Matthews. I played last season for Dead or Alive in the CGS. It’s not the first time I’ve played competitively, but at the moment I’m just getting into the media side of competitive gaming, especially with Gamerthon this year.

Starks: What are your plans for 2008 now that you’ve planned to miss the year competitively? Will you return for Virtua Fighter?

Georgie: Maybe, maybe not. Possibly with competitions I might do so, but I probably won’t go to WCG for it as Nash (Another competitive fighting gamer) will probably win it. I think I’d prefer to stick to Dead or Alive, Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. I’m better at them.

Starks: To my knowledge, you’re the first paid professional girl gamer in Australia, as you had a contract in CGS. Are other girl gamers attracted to competitive gaming?

Georgie: Umm, I’m going to say yes mostly because of the attention – No offence girls! I myself always wanted to play competitively against other people. The money side was just a bonus. Most girls don’t know much about the competitive side of gaming and stick to games like Zelda.

Starks: What originally drew you to take it to the next level professionally?

Georgie: My friend Nash who was one of the guys at the DoA competition told me they (Sydney Underground) were looking for a female to compete in the CGS. So I tried out and made it.

Starks: The diversity of competitive gaming titles means that spectators are often watching a great variety of games. What do you find is the most entertaining to watch?

Georgie: Entertainment wise? Probably Halo because you can really get into that. The diversity of the game play means you can really get revved up watching it. I suppose that the funnest game competitively is probably Street Fighter as you can yell at the person you’re playing right next to you.

Starks: Just in case anybody is wondering we have been playing Street Fighers vs X-Men for the last 5 days non-stop and it has been unreal.

Georgie: Yeah, you’re getting better too. You just kicked some guys ass.

Starks: Oh what?! I beat you 8 games in a row!

Georgie: (Laughs) You did not! That’s a lie! That’s a lie!

Starks: It is not a lie.

Georgie: It’s a lie.

Starks: *sighs* Lies. The cake is a lie.

Georgie: The cake is a lie? Your face is a lie.

Starks: *sighs* Ah.

Georgie: Your mum.

Starks: Oooh. *pause* I don’t have a comeback for that.

Georgie: (laughs)

Starks: OK, lost track a little bit. So where do you see colmpetitive gaming in 2009 collectively?

Georgie: Last year CGS was about getting it out there and getting people sucked in to it. By the end of this year there is going to be a big hype about it. Not really from an underground point of view as its going to get a lot of publicity about it. 2009 then maybe the Australian media will start to pick up on it and then it will hopefully get huge.

Starks: So where did you come up with the name Monkey Kong?

Georgie: Ok, umm, well basically this guy, in this bar, who was trying to pick me up, he was just crapping on about all these gaming experiences that I could tell was a lie so my friend said you should see if he has played Monkey Kong, which was a joke about the game Donkey Kong I made up. So I asked him have you played Monkey Kong and he said ‘Yeah I love that game’. So I kept with that.

Starks: And of all time, what is your favourite game?

Georgie: Umm, can I pick 3?

Starks: Go for it.

Georgie: First one would be Yoshi’s Island on the SNES. The best game, it got me into gaming. The second one would be Radical Racs on the SNES as well and the third one would be Shadow of the Colossus just because it’s a great game.

Starks: If you could be one particular gaming character, who would it be?

Georgie: You’re expecting me to pick Link right? Haha, I think I’d pick Doctor Robotnik because he’s fat and I could jiggle up and down when I laugh.

Starks: Well thanks very much for the interview and all the best for your future competitive gaming.
