Gamerthon Interview - Sam and Juzzy from Everise

Interview from Starks - Tuesday, 03 June 2008 @ 8:27pm

Everise Gaming Clan are an established team that has proved itself in the Australian Call of Duty PC community.

Beginning their competitive play with CoD2, Everise have won numerous tournaments, and are now seeking to stamp their dominance on CoD4.

Starks: I’m here with Sam and Juzzy from Everise. First of all, can you give us a run down on your competitive experience and how long you’ve been competing for.

Juzzy: I used to play Day of Defeat back in the day when it used to be big. After that ,I moved on to CoD2 and we established a team there. From CoD2, we moved on to CoD4.

Sam: I started gaming about 7 years ago in 2001. I got into competitive gaming aobut 3 or 4 years ago and ever since then I’ve been evolving myself from a player into a manager.

Starks: So Gamerthon has taking competitive gaming to a new level in terms of presentation. What are your thoughts on the whole event?

Sam: I personally think it is really good. How it has actually presented itself is really nice. I don’t know about anyone else but I think it will help grow e-sports even further in Australia. It’s events like these that we need more of, and it will help to grow and develop the community to become much stronger.

Starks: What about you Juzzy?

Juzzy: I actually like the whole Gamerthon scene; just the way they have the stage set up. The community is good, the staff are good, everything is really well put together. Hopefully this can evolve to adapt other big gaming events as well. This is really just a stepping stone for the gaming scene in Australia.

Starks: Do you think the emphasis on actual LAN’s is more important or online comps? Is it a happy medium between the two?

Juzzy: Playing the competition online really helps set up everyone at the start; It helps to adapt to other teams and other players so that moves into other larger LAN’s. One of the reasons we are here today is because of the competition on CyberGamer.com.au which was run by Asterix for CoD4. That evolved from online to LAN so that was really good for us to progress.

Starks: Call of Duty 4 looks to be the next big FPS title for PC gaming. How do you think it is going to stack up against games like Source and UT3 which is coming out.

Juzzy: CoD 4 got off to a really good start. I wish there were a couple more teams involved in the game, but the gameplay and the attitude that people have is really good to see. UT3 has a lot of support and Source has been picked up by CGS so it’s quite large too, but I think that if CoD4 can keep progressing then I can see it evolving into the next big thing.

Starks: The 360 is quite a strong competitive community for CoD4. Do you think both platforms can exist together or will only one of them succeed?

Sam: I would say that the PC would probably dominate the 360, but then again the 360 has actually been more popular over the years and probably both of them will grow community wise.

Juzzy: Just seeing comps like Halo, they go off at LAN’s and competitions, and they’ve expanded internationally. Perhaps CoD4 will have the same future on the 360 as well.

Starks: So what does the future hold for Everise

Sam: I would say that Everise is going down a great path now. I think we need look at getting positive 1st results at every event we attend, and at the moment we need to structure our management to ensure all our players are in good positions and form leading up to each competition. I also think we need sponsors at this time as well.

Juzzy: It’s not just winning every game as well, it’s about expanding ourselves and getting a marketing strategy. If you look at teams such as Immunity and sqL they have really good marketing strategies and the way they present themselves means that we really need to target that path.

Starks: Thanks very much guys, and I wish you the best of luck with Gamerthon 2008!
