Gamerthon Interview - haxz0r from Sequential Gaming

Interview from Starks - Tuesday, 03 June 2008 @ 8:27pm

hax has been around in the console competitive community for many years, competing in everything from Halo, Call of Duty and FEAR.

Forming Team BestBR before being sponsored by Sequential Gaming, his side has sought to lift the benchmark of Australian console gaming to levels that will see Aussie teams competing at an International level.

Starks: Hi Stefan, would you just like to give a run down on who you are and how long you've been playing Halo 3 for.

Haxz0r: Sure thing. I’m known as Hax in the gaming world, my gamertag is haxxxz0r. I am currently the captain of Sequential Gaming's Halo3 team, formerly known as Team Best BR (BBR). I have been playing Halo 3 since its release and prior to Halo 3 I played both Halo 1 and Halo 2.

Starks: Console gaming has come a long way in terms of professionalism; Where does Gamerthon rank?

Haxz0r: I think Gamerthon is a big step up for competitive console gaming in Australia, as it is the first time we have had live event coverage and a main-stage/commentator step up similar to MLG. Hopefully future events (WCG, Game1 etc) will adopt some of these spectator based elements.

Starks: You and your team were recently picked up by Sequential Gaming; What does this mean to you?

Haxz0r: I take it as a good opportunity to further legitimize competitive console gaming in Australia. By being acquired by one of top PC multi-gaming teams hopefully more people within the industry will take notice to the growing competitive console community, which could possibly lead to bigger and more frequent events. I also see it as a personal achievement, as for a long time my team and I have competed without any formal sponsorship, so to finally attain it is rewarding.

Starks: How do events like Gamerthon help raise the profile of competitive console gaming?

Haxz0r: An event like Gamerthon provides a large amount of exposure for competitive console gaming. It was extensively covered by many Australian gaming sites (AG included) and many competitive gaming forums. The event was even advertised in Melbourne paper further increasing mainstream exposure. Although to me the live video coverage of the event was the most effective element in raising the profile of competitive console gaming. Prior to Gamerthon only PC games, primarily CS, had received live coverage, so to see Halo and other console titles receive such coverage was awesome.

Starks: Where do you see sqL in the next year?

Haxz0r: Hopefully still at the top of Halo scene, competing regularly in online and lan events. Possibly with more sponsors and an increased level of team exposure.

Starks: What goals and aspirations do you as a side hold?

Haxz0r: Well we want to maintain our position as the top Halo team in Australia. We have been undefeated in tournament play for a year and half now, so we are going to work hard to maintain that. We are seriously considering attending an MLG event this year, to be specific MLG Toronto in August. This would make us the first Australian Halo team to compete at an MLG and the first team to compete in 4v4 internationally. We would be aiming for Top 32. The big Australia event for us this year is WCG Nationals, held at Luna Park (Sydney) also in August. The winners of this event receive flights and accommodation to WCG World Finals held in Cologne.

Starks:Where will your attention turn to next after Gamerthon?

Haxz0r: We will be focusing mainly on WCG Nationals but also just generally practising for MLG if we do end up going.

Starks: Thanks very much for your time Hax, most appreciate.
