48hr IGDA Game Making Midnight Update
News from Yug - Saturday, 04 October 2008 @ 1:44am
It's approaching the early AM of Saturday at the IGDA 48 Hour Game Making Challenge - my cameraman Mik Dobele has abandoned me, the shops have closed so we only have noodles, biscuits and bread to sustain us, and I'm getting questionable responses to my card tricks.

Provided supplies for the brave teams

Team Duct Tape seem to have distracted themselves with some other slightly more well know games.

The first to go - the sleeping area claims it's first victim
It's fascinating to find out how some of the teams got here in the first place even. Two of them - 'Black Wolf' and 'Friction', actually flew up from Woolongong just to compete!
Last years champs 'Sif90' are here too, although they seem convinced that they won't be allowed to win this year. I don't know though, I'm a big fan of their KILLER WATERMELONS idea.

Forget tomatoes, Sif90 have created the killer watermelon!
Then there are the slightly bizarre team 'Laserback Turtles', who seem to be run by a guy in a pirate hat, and have a lovely collection of crochet video game character mascots adorned across their table.
There have already been a few upsets though - the artist for 'Lurkers Craft' didn't even turn up, claiming he forgot about a shift he had to do at Subway! Pfft, someone has their priorities wrong!
Also of note are the extremely organised Portal Marmosets, who not only have their very own blog, but have already started finalising some of their key artwork.
And then there's Chen, who has been setting up the network and connection here all afternoon, and is determined to spend the 48 hours playing Warhammer Online. I'm planning on taking a photo of him every 6 hours, to chronologically keep track of his descent into MMO madness.

As well as the local teams, there are also two teams from AIE down in Canberra who are competing. I got a chance to interview Adrian from the team 'Undomesticated Equines' down there, and he had some interesting things to say about their involvement in the event and their strategies over the weekend:

Yug: How did you find out about the 48 hour gaming comp?
Adrian: We are all currently doing the Advanced diploma in Professional Game development course ending this year. We just finished working on our 15 week project and are not into the final part of our course which involves putting our portfolio's together and searching for jobs.
I found the comp on the tsumea website, and seeing that it was being judged by some leading industry professionals it doesn’t hurt to get your work out and seen.
Yug: Are you in it to WIN it, or just happy to be involved?
Adrian: We are always in it to win, i don't think you could call yourself Australian if you wearn't striving to be the best.
Yug: What preparations have you guys made to go the distance - the full 48 hours? Any special tricks up your sleeve?
Adrian: We have a massive store of soft drinks, food, a good breakfast plan (as it is the most important meal you know) and a 30 pack of berrocca. That plus all our talent and skill that we have up our sleeve I think will help us make the distance.
