48 hr Game Challenge - Matt decides 16 is enough
News from Matt - Saturday, 04 October 2008 @ 11:07pm
So I've arrived at the event and Simon and I have made the most retarded decision possible.
We want to join in. Yes, we're going to make a game. In the 19 hours remaining.
I'm not sure if you guys know this but I am KIND OF a programmer. But not a real programmer. I am a web programmer, all the australiangamer stuff is done by me, so anything webby or databasy is up my alley.
Heh. That sounds kinda dirty.
So I gave it some thought. What can I do without graphics or a full game engine. I considered for a while some sort of Sudoku or crossword type game. But really that sounds like lame So I gave it some thought. What about something like Chess? It doesn't need anything like that. The rules are well known, there's no need for AI, etc.
But let's be honest. It's been done. Chess sucks. I don't mean to dismiss the game of kings. I'm just saying that from a programming point of view. If there's anything us programmers hate it's "exceptions". All of these things should work the same... except this one. Which is different. Arrrrghhh! Chess is full of exceptions, and the pieces can move gaily. That means determining illegal moves, etc. Fuck that.
I looked into making Go instead, an ancient japanese strategy game. THE ancient japanese strategy game. But it just uses black and white stones. Boring from a design point of view.
So we've settled on Stratego. Stratego has a diverse set of characters (10 in all) and a simple set of rules. There's decent scope for my darling Simon to do some cool designs for both the board and the characters.
Awesomely, because this is a web game and this is... well... the web... it should be possible to actually put the thing up live on the internets! Will have an update soon.
