The return of CPL - Is it possible?
News from Starks - Thursday, 27 November 2008 @ 1:46pm
The failings of the Cyberathlete Professional League, one of the longest running organisation in the history of e-Sports, looks to be having a lifeline thrown its way. In an incredible development to this story, and what looks to be the resurrection of a financially defunct company, the historic organisation has been aquired by an off shore organisation in the United Arab Emirates, renamed the CPL LLC and is looking to begin operations in the future.
In a remarkable twist to a story most thought done and dusted earlier this year, the following press releases on the CPL website present an increasingly positive outlook to a company that bit the dust after being run into the ground.
View the below for what is an incredible turn of events.
Monday, 25 August 2008 - Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and Dallas, Texas, USA - NewWorld.com, Inc., a leader in the interactive entertainment industry in the USA has announced that its intellectual property, Cyberathlete Professional League® (CPL) has been acquired by an investment group based in the United Arab Emirates.
Ms. Angela Summers, a spokesperson for the acquiring investment group, said, "We are planning to launch a new company which will be named CPL, LLC and will be headquartered in the United Arab Emirates. The new company will organise videogame tournaments worldwide."
Ms. Angela Summers continued, "The CPL is a globally recognised brand that has more history in the videogame industry than all other leagues combined. We look forward to reintroducing gamers to a better, larger and more exciting CPL."
Angel Munoz, the founder and former president of the CPL, said, "This acquisition is just the kind of positive support that the international interactive entertainment industry needs. I look forward to seeing CPL continue under new management, adding further accolades to its history."
Founded in June 1997, the CPL is a pioneer in professional video game tournaments and over the course of ten years hosted 60 international main events, sanctioned 600 international qualifiers and awarded $3 million in cash prizes. The CPL began as a small LAN event in Dallas, Texas, and went on to initiate world-class competitions across five continents.
Further details and marketing contact information will be released before the end of September 2008.
Wednesday 1 October 2008 - Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates -The newly acquired CPL, LLC announced today that it intends to move forward on an aggressive time-line with the hiring of its core executive team and the identification and acquisition of technologies and distribution platforms, all leading to a 2009 launch with two international events, including one event in the United States.
In the next 90 days, CPL, LLC will engage a team of industry professionals and is currently seeking to fill positions in Marketing, Business Development, Online Development, and Event Production. Persons with experience in these fields who also have experience endemic to the gaming industry are invited to submit a resume to jobs@thecpl.ae*.
Additionally, CPL, LLC is in negotiations with multiple media and gaming technology properties for either acquisition or partnership. While focus is currently on major media and technology development organizations, the investment group recognizes that the gaming community itself is often the origin for the most advanced competitive gaming technology, and plans to offer a medium through which independently developed technology can be presented for review.
Before the end of 2008, CPL, LLC will announce the details for two large international events to be hosted in 2009. Various game titles across multiple platforms are currently being reviewed for inclusion in these events, with the objective of including both competitive and entertainment titles. One of these events will be hosted in the United States; the location of the second event is currently undecided.
