Activision Blizzard may stop making games for the PS3; Sony fanbois cry out in teen angst

News from Starks - Wednesday, 24 June 2009 @ 11:59pm

I have no idea why they'd do this. Boycotting a medium that will net them a profit is, in my opinion, a poor business choice. Whilst I would agree that the PS3 is a difficult console to work on, it is without a doubt the best hardware on the market and removing yourself from that segment is just... stupid. Read on for more info.

The target is Sony, the once-dominant hardware maker. “I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform. It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation,” he says.

Complaints from game publishers about the cost of consoles are nothing new, but Mr Kotick's statements were particularly pointed.

"It's a little shot across the bow.... Was there a message there to Sony? Quite possibly," said MKM Partners analyst Eric Handler.

"It is more difficult to develop for the PS3 and it costs a little more... The PS3 install base isn't what they thought it would be and the machine is too expensive."

Sony Computer Entertainment America said "we enjoy healthy business relationships with and greatly value our publishing partners and are working closely with them to deliver the best entertainment experience".

Yeah Valve have said it forever.

Meanwhile, Hideo Kojima the world's greatest nerd says the opposite.

Everyone has their preferences. Activision are bluffing because they want the price of the console to go down. Koei also said the same thing recently iirc.

Sorry to bring this up again but it's the same subject. Kotaku has just posted this news story:

Basically, Valve haven't been happy developing for the PS3 and won't do so in the future until they can figure out a way to make the experience the same for PS3 players as it is for 360 or PC players. Pretty sure this isn't new though, I think I remember something a couple of months ago about Valve's opinion on the PS3. Still, there it is in black and white. Seems Activision aren't the only ones in this boat.

Sorry for the double post but I found this news story on Kotaku quite interesting:

http://www.kotaku.com.au/2009/06/sonys-exc...oming-up-short/

Basically, excluding games sold as part of PS3 hardware bundles, only one PS3 exclusive title published by Sony has sold over a million units - the original Resistance. Not even Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, Uncharted or Resistance 2 have hit that milestone though LBP is fairly close. This is talking just about US sales.

They compare that to Gears of War selling a million copies in a month on Xbox 360, and Gears 2 selling 1.5 million in a month. On Wii, Super Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart Wii have sold over 4 and 6 million units respectively.
