Deus Ex 3 Trailer and Subtitle Arrive
News from Cormac - Friday, 12 March 2010 @ 7:38pm
Well, did I call it or did I fucking call it? The trailer for Deus Ex: Human Revolution is now viewable on the game's official website. Ok so it was a pretty obvious call to make, but still, over two years since the debut trailer I've had all the time in the world to reserve my cynicism.
In a nutshell, we're shown some overt biblical references long enough for my eyebrows to lower, before they're supplanted by notions of greek mythology. Following this, a man who is presumably our protagonist and humble narrator supplies some tasteful angst.

I was reading an interview with the lead designer of this on IGN and he kept stressing over and over that they have based this on DE1 and not invisible war. He was obviously trying really hard to make the point that it will be much more open and less linear than IW.
I really hope they do the series justice with this one. Deus Ex was such a let down after DX1 (which I consider to be the best game of the past 10 years). I think they're on the right track at least, setting it as a prequel. There is a wealth of backstory to explore there and the trailer and title seems to hint it will deal with the first mechanical augmentation experiments, before the moved into nanotech in DX1.
Of course DX1 is more than just super agents and conspiracies, it's about the freedom of player expression and systemic game design - something that DX2 lacked and suffered for. I'm all for delving back into the conspiracy ridden worth of Deus Ex, but if it ends up being just another corridor shooter (even a really good one), then it's not living up to the legacy of the original.
There's nothing religious about it. Stop trying to read shit that you want to read into it. Icarus is about a guy who was granted wings. He flew too close to the sun and because the wings were bound with wax, they melted and he fell to his death. It's meant to be a parallel between humanity striving for greatness while at the same time not being ready for it.
As to the trailer: looks pretty, but so did the first Hellgate: London one...
or is it just an attempt to invoke the thoughts of religious overtones and deeper meanings so that gamers will think this game is in fact deep?
The references I saw were actually classical Greek, (ie the story of Icarus.)
Which would fit in with the overall story of the first, being an attempt by MJ12 to recreate Aquinas' city on the hill. (Having said that, Thomas Aquinas was a philospher and a religious scholar, so theres biblical overtones aplenty there, too.)
