Shigeru Miyamoto stepping down to work on smaller games
News from Yug - Thursday, 08 December 2011 @ 5:59pm
Shigeru Miyamoto (or Shiggy as we call him after a few drinks) has announced during an exclusive interview with Wired.com that he will be stepping down from his current role of overseeing development on the franchises he has fathered over the last couple of decades.
“What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself,” Miyamoto said. “Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.”
Miyamoto said that he’s hoping to start work on a project in 2012, and hopefully show the game off publicly within the year.
“In other words, I’m not intending to start from things that require a five-year development time,” he said.
What does this mean for your favourite franchises such as Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, etc?
Probably not alot at this point. While there is no doubt as to the influence Miyamoto has had in shaping his creations, he goes on to say he's been very happy with what the younger developers have achieved during recent iterations of the series.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this story is speculating as to what smaller titles Miyamoto might have in mind for his future development. What kind of project do you think he might work on next?
