New XCOM Game Announced - Developed By The Civilization Team
News from Luke - Friday, 06 January 2012 @ 4:37pm
Back in 2010 a reboot of the classic 90's series XCOM was announced which was being developed by 2K Marin, the studio who worked on BioShock 2. As usual hardcore fans of the original series were up in arms as this reboot was being turned into a Strategy Shooter. However those sneaky people over at 2K Games have been secretly developing 2 XCOM games alongside each other.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown is an action strategy game from the team behind the Sid Meier’s Civilization franchise
“We’re looking forward to building upon the core gameplay experiences that fans of the original X-COM love, while introducing the franchise to a new generation,” said Sarah Anderson, senior vice president of marketing for 2K. “With Firaxis’ XCOM: Enemy Unknown and 2K Marin’s upcoming XCOM, 2K Games will be offering two different gameplay experiences drawing from the classic X-COM universe. Each game offers a unique XCOM experience in different genres, as envisioned by two different studios with unique creative visions.”
I'm a big fan of the Civilization series and absolutely loved the latest addition - Civ 5 from Firaxis, so as you can expect I'm really keen to see what this team can do outside of that series. For anyone wanting more details on this new XCOM game you can pick up the February issue of Game Informer for their exclusive first look.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be available in 2012 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

I hope this means that this second XCOM game will be a turn-based game like the original. I really liked the first and second XCOM games. Unfortunaltely the 3rd, 4th & 5th games were departures from this format. I bought all of them of steam about 2 years ago and could only get into the first two.
This news has gives me back hope that I will see a version XCOM in 3D that isn't a first person shooter.
