Matt, surely you must have felt a little awkward playing the game and talking about it to EVERYONE who listens to AG?
One thing that stuck out to me in this podcast you forgot to mention when listing out the rape statistics that it is only rapes reported (though obviously you can't really build statistics on unreported rapes)
The issue is that rape is that its one of those unspoken crimes. Its not like having your car stolen, or your house broken into. You report it, and if you can afford to you replace/fix the damage and you go on. You might be a little shaken up by the whole thing, but you buy some better locks or an alarm and that can usually put things to rest.
Rape on the other hand, well, theres no real way to undo the damage. Not only that, but due to certain societies views on sexuality, theres exists a stigma behind being a victim of rape. So the victim not only has to try to cope with the actual incident, but also a lingering sense of shame and fear. When you add it all up, it can be extremely difficult for some people to come out about it. Not only that but to then report it requires a certain level of trust in the police, which isn't something you have in many places.
A good example of the flaws in these statistics is Saudi Arabia, a country often found at the bottom of the list for rapes per capita. This is not due to an effective legal system, or properly education. This is due to the fact that Saudi Arabia is a country where rape victims can be sentenced to lashes, prison time or worse.
A country where stigmas or distrust mean that only 15 out of every 50 cases actually gets reported will almost always look better than one where 40 out of 50 get reported.
In this sense, the proper education, preventative measures and legal action only serve to skew the statistics.
Thank you guys so much for covering that Herald Sun article. I came across it last week and was just astounded by it's hyperbole and stupidity. You gave it the treatment it deserved.
Damn Yahtzee and his hatin' on the Dreamcast...
Awww the Dreamcast, it was the little console that could but chose not to.
/mandatory pertinent post.
But yeah, it won't be hard to work better than Skate It, that shit was frustrating.
