Podcast from Matt - Saturday, 12 December 2009 @ 3:26pm

The GDAA awards, Medal of Honor, and Raskulls
Talking about the GDAA awards, rebooting the Medal of Honor franchise, and we discuss both censorship and the Xbox 360 in Japan. Also discussed is how different the versions can be from platform to platform without being a completely different platform. Finally, Raskulls by local developer Halfbrick gets a shout-out as Yug plays through it.

Firstly, Max Payne rocked. Past tense. Then he got old in age, plot and character. Then he lost all his hair. Then he got deported.

Second, thanks a bunch for the Last Life mention guys - and thanks to Yahtzee for remembering the name, hope you enjoyed playing it. The whole team was really thrilled. Yes, Katie Grech, Ellena Linden and Trav Jenkins all worked on Last Life too, yes my name is actually Max Vasey and yes I only designed and programmed the game. Yes, I was also lead design on Blakely van de Buckle's Brass Cabaret and yes that was a student game from Qantm College. Yes, Last Life was done completely independently, though three of us were students at the time and Ellena Linden also worked on the art for both games. So we had a pretty successful run. Thanks again.

I do sympathise with your thoughts on GCAP this year though - I paid to get into the conference (despite having two games on show) just so I could get the rest of my team exhibitor passes (cheaper entry). We had to fly down from brisbane too and in the end it cost us over a thousand dollars just to attend. We're students right out of college! That said, tips go to Firemint who paid for a bunch of AIE guys to go and exhibit and also footed the bill for some recent industry layoffs. Cudos to them. The conference was awesome in every way - but it is so damn pricey.

For clarification:

'Last Life' actually was made by 4 people. Max Vasey coded and designed the entire thing and got a couple of QANTM people in to do the texturing/modeling and cinematic/animation (Katie Gretchen and Ellena Linden) and music by
Trav Jenkins. Took them less than 3 months to complete.

Max was also the Lead designer on the QANTM brisbane game that made the finals 'Blakely van de Buckle’s Brass Cabaret'
with Mathieu Halley (Project Manager), Ellena Linden (Texture Artist/Character Rigging, Modeling and Animating), Martin Brennan (Environment), Katherine Power (Programmer), Adam Parkinson (Programmer), Mark Lawson (Programmer), James Macaulay (Audio Engineer), Eugene Turner (Multimedia/Marketing Director).

So he has worked with someone who has a last name of 'Power', close enough I say it was entertaining - but credit should go to his team :)

You're an artist too? Ye gods Cormac, could you be *any more* stereotypically hippie?

I don't smoke pot if that makes you feel any better. Otherwise I'm pretty much the complete package. Vege risotto anyone?

And someone once pointed out why The Cleveland Show works - with the bar for comedy set so low by the other two, is there any way the spinoff with the black guy can possibly be worse?

Yes.
