Last time I had a chance to play Modern Warfare 3 was at E3 this year when we were introduced to the new mode Spec Ops Survival. A few weeks ago Activision invited me along to check out the game on Australian turf where I had a chance to speak to Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling, and take a look at what we can expect from the multiplayer this year.

On the outside Modern Warfare 3 plays and feels the same as the past titles in the series. Now there is nothing wrong with this at all, they’ve managed to nail that fast paced action shooting that makes the multiplayer fun to play, but have further refined it to deliver an even better experience.
One of the biggest changes that has been made is with the kill streak system, it’s been overhauled and is no longer based on kill’s but with points that you earn. This gives those players that like to take up different roles in the game the same rewards as the people who just shoot everything that moves. For example planting or defusing the bomb in Search and Destory or completing other team based objectives will count towards the new point streak system. And the great thing about some of the points you earn is that a handful of these objective points will not reset upon your death.
I managed to play through a bunch of the classic multiplayer modes that we’ve previously seen in the series, but clearly the favourite amongst the day was the new Kill Confirmed mode. Each time a player dies they drop their dog tag which floats above the deceased body, but depending on which team collects it can result in a different outcome. If you manage to kill an enemy then either you or one of the members of your team must pick up the dog tag which results in a point being added to your scoreboard, the kill is confirmed . Alternatively if someone on the other team successfully snatch’s up the dog tag beforehand then the kill is denied and no points are awarded. Kill confirmed encourages players to work together or get right up in the opposing enemies face in order to make sure you either confirm or deny that kill.
As you would expect Modern Warfare 3 seems to be on par with delivering yet another outstanding experience and pushing the boundaries of multiplayer first person shooters. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is due out November on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Keep an eye out for our full review.
