God ... Damn ... World War II Shooters. I mean seriously, haven't we had enough? Apparently not it seems, as new games come out trying to capture the realism and grittiness of WAR! Thank god Uber Soldier isn?t one of them!
Sure, it starts out innocently enough, as you and your convoy of army vehicles are ambushed whiledriving through the forest. Then you die. Then you are brought back to life. It?s about this time that you realise there aren?t going to be any re-creations of the Normandy beach landing, or the attack on pearl harbour. Nope, it?s time to get revenge by gunning down some mindless Nazi?s and their freaky twisted experiments, with yourself being one of the latter.
While this is definitely a pretty looking game, it certainly lacks a lot of polish. It?s difficult to know if that?s because of the preview build I was playing, or if it?s something inherent to the game. The gaming environment has a very shiny but static feel to it, with rag doll physics that look just a bit too fake for my liking. Then again, like I said, we aren?t going for realism here, this is a gory action packed Nazi/zombie shooter. It actually feels a lot like Return to Castle Wolfenstien, but a lot less serious, and a lot less refined.
The only real thing distinguishing this game from any other is the inclusion of what is referred to as your ?ubernatural powers?. You eventually get a rage meter in the bottom left of your screen which displays how much energy you have left to use your powers, and is filled back up by headshots, take-downs and melee kills.
The powers themselves are actually pretty damn cool, the first one being the ability to switch on a protective shield bubble around you, where any bullets that are fired by the enemy are stuck in your shield. You then have the option to either turn off the shield and the bullets drop to the ground, OR you can aim and fire all the bullets. It took a few goes to get the hang of it, but once you do, it?s actually a really refreshing and innovative technique. I was impressed.
I hadn?t actually heard of this game before I played the preview build, and it?s usually the case when you play something with no expectations that I?m usually pleasantly surprised. Although I can?t see this game being amazingly popular or redefining any genres, it also doesn?t appear to be all that bad, and does feature a few cool new tricks that haven?t been done before.
