Oh lord, what a time to be a 360 junkie. If you think you’ve had enough already with Gears of War, Lost Planet and Double Agent, Ubisoft has slapped us in the face with another fantastic title to the Tom Clancy Rainbow Six series. FYI, Rainbow Six series is based around a small tactical group who are called into tricky situations which involve hostages, bombs and sweaty terrorists that no other could handle.
In R6 Las Vegas, you play as Logan Keller, and your mission is to protect the fine city that is Las Vegas from Irena Morales, an international terrorist plotting a scheme against the United States. Logan and his team mates (Jung and Michael) make their way through famous landmarks and casinos in Las Vegas making the missions a little more interesting.
As you begin the game, Logan is sent down via the chopper and commences his training during a real situation, so that means real baddies who want you dead. As you’re walking through the mission Jo (up in the chopper, will guide through this and many more missions to come) will help you out by giving you tips and mission objectives/updates. The first thing she’ll teach you will be one you’ll be using through out the entire game: taking cover. Without covering you’re as a sitting duck, so because this technique is very important Ubisoft have made it a cinch to use.
You can perform the cover technique by going near a wall and simply squeeze the L trigger. You can attach yourself to anything, walls, crates, cars, gates, etc. To peek around the corner or to pop up above the object just point the left analogue stick in the direct. To uncover simply let go of the L trigger. It’s fast, easy and very accurate.. it works great, in fact it’s the best cover system I’ve ever used, better than Gears of War.
You’ll be taught other things like using a snake cam under a door, change your fire rate of your rifle, adding a silencer, rappling upside down, targeting enemies, ordering team mates in locations, breaching doors and some other vital techniques. All these techniques work well in the game. You’re never forced to use them but you are encouraged to use them to get things done quicker, quieter and more effectively.
The gameplay of Las Vegas is a great mix of Gears of War and Ghost Recon Advance Warfare, there are plenty of close encounters where you’ll need to stop and pop but there are also other times where you’ll need you’re team mates to do the dirty work for you. And yeah, you’ll work with your team mates a lot in the game. Michael is a trained bomb technician and Jung is a skilled hacker so these two are needed. Don’t let them die.
R6 Las Vegas engine is based on Unreal™ Technology, so you can expect some very crisp and smooth visuals which hold the action together quite well. Ubisoft has done well to capture the casinos and famous landmarks to make them feel alive, the pretty colours and the bright lights really add to the atmosphere. The enemy AI in Las Vegas is very sophisticated and in some situations are hard to kill. They work very well together so there will be times where you’ll die. A lot.
I’ll give you an example of the AI. There were rooms where I died and had to start from the beginning again, I tried to use the same technique I used before to clear the rooms but only having the AI counter my move and using a completely different defence and offence technique, so it can be tricky. The enemy AI aren’t the only smarties around; your teammates' AI is also spot on. When you give them a certain area to go to they’ll do it the safest and quickest way with out giving away your position (depending if you have infiltrate enabled). They’re also sharp shooters which is very useful when your own aim is off.
You cannot manually save the game wherever you like, so once you've cleared a certain room or saved a hostage (,etc) the game will save your progress as a check point. It works well but there were some situations where you wished you had quicksaves.
The missions are lengthy and will last the average recruit 10 – 15 hours. There are times where it feels like the story is dragging but the gameplay will keep you going. Where R6 Las Vegas really shines is with the multiplayer. You’re able to play up to 4 players on LIVE, system link (or 2 players on the local system) with co-op story mode or terrorist hunt mode. The co-op mode was some of the best fun I had with this game, I only got to play with a team of 3 on LIVE but we put some serious hours into this with some fantastic results.
There’s only one thing greater than AI and that’s MI, Mates Intelligence. No matter how serious and professional you try to look in this game you are bound to screw up sooner or later which will cost not only yourself a life, but your team too. Even over LIVE the game still played and ran beautifully, not a hiccup or a glitch in sight. Though there is one downside with the co-op and that’s the missing Jo. I’m not sure why they removed her because you’ll no longer receive mission updates and you’ll also lose the funky terrorist videos that get streamed to you live in single player. In terrorist hunt you and your mates are dumped into a map with 50 random terrorists popping up, kill them before they kill you, last one standing wins.
You’re also able to play up to 16 other players on LIVE with a stack of modes and 10 massive maps which include casinos, the Hoover dam, a Mexican village, and so on. Game modes include Survival, Team Survival, Sharpshooter, Team Sharpshooter, Retrieval and Attack and Defend. The new mode to the series Attack and Defend requires one team to grab the objective (ie: a suitcase in a vault) and the other team will need to defend. All modes require teams to have 100% teamwork and with out it expect the match to be over within 5 minutes. I found some these modes to be great for a quick and easy way to have fun.
Another really funky feature of R6 Las Vegas on the 360 is you’re able to take a photo of yourself with the Xbox Vision camera and put your sexy face on your playable character. I personally haven’t tried it but after seeing my mate’s fat head on his character it actually looked... pretty damn good. This type of technology only requires the gamer to take a front and a side shot of their face and then the game will render the image to look 3D, and I must say it is much more pleasurable killing your mates while staring at their face. Is that wrong Jack Thompson? I live at 123 FarkYouh St in Getalifeville. But not only that, you begin to play co-op slightly better because you’ll quickly recognise your mates face on the screen, works great and it’s pretty damn cool.
