Wii Sports Resort
Review from Cav - Friday, 21 August 2009 @ 3:08pm

Release: 23 July 2009
Wii Sports sold more consoles for Nintendo than any other title, and now Nintendo look to sell even more with Wii Sports Resort showing what the Motion Plus add-on can do just like Wii Sports showed what motion controllers were capable of.
Jae did a preview, the boys spoke about it on a podcast, so now it's my turn to give you my 2 cents on Wii Sports Resort.
I was always amazed when I saw the original Wii Sports in the pre-owned sales rack at JB, EB or Game. Were people really that unsatisfied with what that game had to offer? C’mon, people! Really? I suppose it probably means more to those who got their Wii on release day and didn’t have much else to choose from other than Zelda. I really enjoyed it…. but it will definitely be shelved for a while as Wii Sports Resort is something I have really taken a shine to. I was really impressed to throw the disc in and find that there were not only 12 different activities to choose from, but even more within each of those! My $99 dollars fetched me Wii Sports Resort and two WiiMotion Plus adapters, as described in my Catalogue Cash In report. This was certainly $99 well spent…. Although not all of the games live up to my expectations, as the WiiMotion adapter could have been showcased a hell of a lot better had some of these sports either had more work done on them, or on the other hand dropped altogether and replaced. I’ll also add that this is another game where I think Nintendo are saying “Why didn’t we originally have achievements like the PS3 and 360”. I think these are what keep me coming back for more. Only in some places am I a perfectionist..... in others, I’m already there.

The Island of Sodor.... so where's Thomas the Tank Engine?
Anyways, please let theCAVman summarise his thoughts on each event for you
Bowling: I was convinced that this would be just more of the same, but the WiiMotion Plus really does add to the amount of spin you can apply. 100 Pin Bowling is great fun. I actually have a higher score on Spin Control bowling than I do regular 10 Pin… Go figure
Canoeing: Umm, why? Paddling really needs some resistance for the rowing action to be credible.
Archery: Link’s Crossbow Training? Pfft! This is actually really good. Distance, cross wind and angles are all taken into account. Buggered if I know where the secret targets are though. Having to go though the motions of drawing back the bowstring is also a plus.

Robin Hood can bite me
Table Tennis: I am not happy with it. Every time I want to switch from forehand to backhand, my Mii swings, then misses the ball. In my opinion the original WiiSports Tennis rates better than this.

Not even the funky Hawaiian shirts make up for this one
Power Cruising: Yawn. No dice. Give me WaveRace 64 any day.
Wakeboarding: This is heaps better than Power Cruising, just for the fact that you have to level your WiiMote after each jump. I found myself waggling like crazy to pull off a huge stunt, only to screw it up by not cementing the landing.
Frisbee: This is my Wii Sports Resort keeper. Frisbee Golf FOR.THE.WIN. I actually want to go and play this for real, but the ‘old mates crew' at my local GC may frown on it. I am really happy with the way the Frisbee reacts to your WiiMote action and the environment. Must give EA’s Tiger Woods 10 a go and see if there is any difference.

House AND Frisbee trained!
Swordplay: I’m still struggling to tell if this is as really as responsive as it should be, or am I just flailing around like an idiot because that is what I am used to doing. I can’t really feel the pressure to win that I would if my enemies were not cutesy Miis. Guess I’ll get back to you after I play Red Steel 2.

Sorry, no free Steak Knives
Basketball: Here’s another one that is growing on me, although sometimes when the pressure is on, it seems hard to grab a ball from the rack. Dunking a ball without arms looks kinda funny too.

No Look Pass? What about No Arm Dunk?
Golf: WiiMotion Plus + Golf = PAIN. Now I play golf for real (not very well and not often enough might I add) and I now realise why I am so shit at it. Must – lock – wrist. In the long run, this may actually help my real life golf game… then again, maybe not.
Cycling: Maybe if you could add the Everlast Weights to this, then you’d get a good workout.
Air Sports: Not overly impressed with Sky Diving. I don’t mind cutting laps around the island, I’ve found all of the check points. Dog fighting just isn’t the same without a joystick.

Who here is hoping for the 'Chute Fail' cheat?
All in all, the WiiMotion Plus Adapter doesn't really change the feel of holding a WiiMote too much, but does do a bit more for the accuracy of what was happening on screen. I like it and can't wait to see and play other titles that use it in the future
Summary
Anyone with a Wii would be mad not to pick this up. Try and track down the Double WiiMotion Plus Adapter deal, then looks around for the EA Tiger and Tennis sets and you have three games and four adapters! Plenty to keep you going!
Pros
Yet another 'off the couch' game from Nintendo - Huge range of games on one disc
Cons
Table Tennis is very poor compared to the original Wii Sport Tennis - WiiMotion Plus should have been around when the Wii was first released
